Cara and Thomas’s elopement day was the perfect blend of adventure, personal touches, and vintage charm. From sunrise mountain moments to an elegant evening at the Strater Hotel, their Durango elopement was beyond meaningful. I documented their day with both digital and film photography for timeless images that captured every unique detail.
We kicked off the day early with a hike on the Purgatory Flats Trail, just north of Durango near Purgatory Resort. This trail is a favorite for its easy-to-moderate terrain and incredible views of the Twilight Peaks and surrounding forest. It’s dog-friendly and a great way to start an adventurous elopement day.
Cara and Thomas brought their sweet pup along, and we wandered through the peaceful morning light capturing laid-back, candid moments. With alpine trees, open meadows, and mountain views as our backdrop, it was the perfect setting for intimate sunrise portraits.
After our hike, we made our way to Baker’s Bridge, a scenic spot just north of Durango known for its stunning views over the Animas River. The bridge sits high above the water and offers a breathtaking natural setting that feels peaceful and remote—perfect for a small, meaningful ceremony.
Cara and Thomas were joined by close family and friends, all wearing teal t-shirts with a custom graphic of the couple (how fun is that?). They exchanged vows in a heartfelt ceremony surrounded by laughter, love, and the sound of the river below. Afterward, we captured group photos with everyone by the river, framed by mountain peaks and pine trees.
Baker’s Bridge is a popular local spot for cliff jumping in summer, but it’s also one of the most scenic areas in the Durango area for elopements and portraits. Located about 20 minutes from downtown, it offers easy access and unforgettable views of the Animas River gorge.
To wrap up their elopement day, Cara and Thomas and I headed into downtown Durango and met at the Strater Hotel, where Cara changed into a shorter dress that matched the vintage vibe of the space perfectly.
We wandered through the hotel’s beautifully preserved historic interiors—plush Victorian furniture, rich wood paneling, and patterned wallpapers made it feel like stepping back in time. The staff and bartenders were incredibly kind and welcoming, letting us take our time creating relaxed, stylish portraits throughout the space.
Located right in the heart of downtown Durango on Main Avenue, the Strater Hotel is one of the most iconic historic hotels in the Southwest. Built in 1887, it’s known for its antique furnishings and Old West charm. You can book a stay through their website or major travel sites, and the rooms are just as photo-worthy as the lobby and saloon.
It’s a dream location for couples who want to mix elegance and history into their elopement day—and especially perfect for vintage-style film photos.
Cara and Thomas’s elopement was a perfect reflection of who they are—laid-back, full of heart, and a little bit vintage. From alpine sunrises to riverside vows and a classy downtown finish, this Strater Hotel elopement in Durango was such a joy to capture.
