What is an Elopement?

The meaning of elopement has changed a lot over the years (I’m a history major, watch out). For a long time, elopements meant “my parents don’t want us to get married so we’re sneaking off.” Lydia in Pride and Prejudice style. But today… it has become something totally different.

The people who elope today are couples who don’t want to fit into the “cookie cutter” traditional wedding, with the guests, and ceremonies, and pomp, and garter toss (don’t get me started on that one). They aren’t being rude by refusing to invite friends and family. (in fact… I would argue that you can elope and still invite a few of your closest friends and family). Instead, elopements portray just how much you care for your partner, by removing all the distractions and stresses that can come with a wedding. You make the day about your love and commitment to each other, rather than making everyone else happy.

I’m sure there are some people that think eloping to a beautiful location is just “one of those trends” that will fade in a few years. Here’s why I don’t think it will, and why I think everyone should at least consider an elopement.

FIRST: Your elopement is all about you and your person. In your favorite place. No family members you have to please. No traditions you feel pressured into.

Because I feel most alive in the mountains, I focus a lot on outdoor elopements. But you can elope ANYWHERE that’s meaningful to both of you.

SECOND: Eloping is a lot more cost effective. Without the guests to feed and the venue to rent out, it cuts down costs tremendously.

THIRD: Your marriage will be totally unique… no two elopement’s are the same.

Some couples backpack to their stunning view, while others take the day to relax and picnic as they enjoy each other. Whether you decide to hike, nap, climb, skate, explore… IT’S YOUR ELOPEMENT. You get to choose what traditions to create.

After all that, if you’re still thinking… “Actually, traditions and family traditions ARE me! I don’t want to be alone, I want to share it with everyone I know, and have a blast with throwing that bouquet and dancing with my mom!”

That is ABSOLUTELY wonderful! You know you best! And I have packages for those too. I just wish that I had know about the option to elope, and I think everyone should at least consider it before planning their day.
